Well being increases with each metre of altitude, up to 2000 m asl.
In the high mountains the human organism finds new strength
In a unique research project, the "Austrian Moderate Altitude Study" (AMAS 2000), the great value of a vacation at altitudes between 1,400 and 2,000 m asl was demonstrated in recuperating health.Twenty-two men between 39 and 65 years of age participated in the pilot study, which lasted three weeks. They were affected by metabolic syndromes – namely they were overweight, had metabolic disturbances relative to sugars and fats in the blood and high blood pressure. The subjects were selected by the Innsbruck University Clinict.
The participants enjoyed a normal mountain vacation between 1,400 and 2,000 m asl, with hiking, excursions and a normal diet. The results, partially shown statistically, partially proven as a clear tendency, were summarised as follows by scientific director Dr. Egon Humpeler:
- Greater economy of the heart and circulatory system
- Improvement of glycaemic metabolism and fats in the blood
- Average of two kilos of loss in weight
- Positive neuro-psychological effects (evident and permanent reduction of subjective disturbances relative to a positive attitude towards life)
- Net improvement of the quality and duration of sleep
In the high mountains, more young red corpuscles are produced, without increasing their overall number. The blood maintains its normal consistency, but transportation of oxygen to the cells decidedly improves.
But the Alpine high mountain environment also has another secondary effect:
At this altitude, allergic persons can breathe freely. The flowering time of herbs with pollen is enormously shortened. After July the mountain can be considered free of allergens. Even mites and moulds have no chance at these altitudes.
Alpine wellness means having a complete, all round sensation of well-being. The mix of luxury programmes, strengthening of muscles and relief of stress at a healthy altitude makes Alpine wellness a special and unique form of vacation well being. Despite this, the only parameter of the effects is the decisive, if not scientific,
