„tips for leisure-time activities and trips”

The gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle

A fascinating garden

In the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, plants from all over the world are gathered together and typical landscapes of South Tyrol are presented. Paths meander uphill through water and terraced gardens, leading to the Sensual Garden or the Japanese Garden, to the cacti and succulents mound or to cultivated plants of the south, like the olive tree and the grapevine.

Meran Health Spa

The spa in the heart of the South Tyrol

MeranThis idyllic little town has long been a favourite watering hole for many a renowned scientist or medical man. They
came in search of the mild Mediterranean climate and pure healing air of this northern Italian spa town. Meran became synonymous with a pleasant climate and fresh air not only in the South Tyrol, but also in the wider world. The attention and interest paid to this spa town turned it into a world-famous location. Meran was for many centuries the capital of the ducal county of the Tyrol.

Many of the area’s imposing buildings, with forts, castles and palaces among them, date back to this glorious period of ducal rule. These architectural masterpieces make an important contribution to the cultural landscape of Meran. A foray into Meran is worth the effort in any event! Not least because you can shop there to your heart’s content.

MMM - Messners Mountain Museum

Tirol Castle

Tirol Castle - Ancestral castle of Tyrol and provincial museum of history and culture.

Schloss TirolThe archeological museum provides an overall view about the early settlers (7 BC) in this alpine region. From the Bronze Age, there is a melting furnace, still fully intact to be seen.
The main wall, built around 1100, remains one of the oldest and best preserved castle walls including parts of the battlements. Also to be wondered are the marble porches from the 12th Century. The original symbolic sculptures belong to the most creative Romanistic work in Tyrol. The chapel with Freskos from the 13th Century also has the oldest Tyrolean stained glass windows and an enormous wooden carved crucifix from the 14th Century.

Lake Kalterer See

The warmest of the Alpine lakes

Lake Kalterer See, the southern-most bathing lake in the Alps (214 m / 700 ft above see level) has a summer temperature of up to 27°C. With a surface area of 147 hectares (over half a square mile), Lake Kalterer See is the largest natural body of water in the South Tyrol. It is around 1.8 km (just over a mile) long and 0.9 km (around half a mile) wide. It is four metres/ 13 feet deep. The centre of Kaltern is about 4 km/2½ miles away.
A 7.5 km/5 mile walk around the lake lets you appreciate the rich variety of plant and animal life in the area. Watersports enthusiasts are particularly keen visitors to the lake, which offers the chance to practice swimming, surfing, angling, pedalo boating and rowing. The lake also has its own surfing school.

Avelengo Hafling

St. Kathrein KirchleinKnottnkino in Vöran

Chapel of St. Kathrein

The Chapel of St. Kathrein dating from the year 1251 represents - in a certain sense - the symbol of Hafling, because it can even be seen from Meran and its surroundings. The inside of the chapel, which is decorated with frescos dating back to the 15th century, also houses numerous other precious works of art. Unfortunately the inside can only be looked at through a gap in the portal.

Nature studies path in Hafling

Around the Sulfner Weiher (pond) leads a nature studies path with a great variety of trees and bushes, for which the conditions at this altitude (1,300 m) are perfet. Here you can also admire the white water lilies, which cover nearly the entire surface of the pond.

The nature cinema on Voeran

this cinema is made by air and light....... is not a traditional cinema.

St. Katharina shrine

This wayside shrine is situated near the chapel of St. Kathrein and dates back to the 15th century.
The inside is decorated with partially resthoursd frescos.
